I have been fortunate to have met some very wonderful people -- in person -- via Passion. However, it seems as though finding people on Passion, to ultimately meet and not just to become virtual friends, has two basic routes: the IM chat or paying for a membership in order to send messages (and search out members just for that purpose).

I should also put it out there that when I say "to ultimately meet" I am looking for someone for an on-going situation locally (if such a person exists) or when I travel, someone to enjoy the moment with.

It have paid to be a member off and on over the years, usually when I know that I have a better command over my professional (and personal) life. Yet I have come to see that finding people who really want to meet -- regardless if it would be long-term or for the moment -- are to be found on the IM system more than via just a paid membership. Yet paid membership does signify a clear desire. But the contact, the connection, and the going-forward often stems from online IM contact.

Is this just me? Which has worked for you the most/best -- IM or mailing members directly?

From: The Decision to Remain in an Involuntarily Celibate Relationship

Journal of Marriage and Family
Volume 70, Issue 2, pages 519–535, May 2008

Based upon qualitative data from a sample of 77 married or long-term cohabiting heterosexuals self-defining as involuntarily celibate, we used social exchange theory to develop a model for understanding the causes and consequences of sexual inactivity in committed relationships. Although reported consequences of involuntary celibacy tended to be negative, most partnered celibates were in stable relationships and reluctant to leave. As a result, they developed diverse coping strategies, and most were still hopeful of resuming sexual activity. Based upon these findings, the paper concludes with a discussion of practical implications and directions for further research.

A very good read if you like academic articles, and especially if you have found yourself celibate in your marriage.
