Maple Smoked Ham...๐Ÿ... and First Impressions ๐Ÿ˜Š

It's the middle of the end, of winter, over here and I had an idea. "How about a picnic?" I asked. The sun was shining and it was, so... much warmer, than the minus 100, it felt like, last week. "Let's do it!" I said. She agreed, and I put my phone down. Off I drove, to pick her up - on the other side, of the island.

Along the way (not far from her place), I popped into a small grocery store, to buy the supplies. Fresh bread, some maple smoked ham, olives and (of course) strawberries. Oh... and some cheese. I stood in front of a sliding glass door and stared. The chrome racks, were piled high with, Kraft Singles and boxes of Velveeta . I was hoping, for something more eclectic. You know... brie... camembert... strong cheddar? I glanced the elderly woman shopper beside me and asked.

"Is this all the cheese they have?"

"Well... How much do you need?"

I looked her and blinked. By the time I got to my lady friend's house, she was waiting for me, outside and quickly jumped into the car. I told her my story, about the cheese and... other things. She listened to me; in the same way, you'd listen to the announcements, at the subway station - just enough to notice, if there were any emergencies. I could tell, she was distracted.

She then spoke, and told me about her day. She had a unique, high pitched voice. How would I describe it? Well... if a baby carrot could talk, that's how it might sound. Something else, in her demeaner, led me to sense, she was very sad. She was always, such a happy person. Yet... I know... even in a bright candle flame, there is always, a touch of blue. She gradually, revealed to me, why she was upset. Her oldest , had decided to move, out of her home, and into an apartment - with her new boyfriend.

I asked her what she thought of him. Turns out, she'd only met him a few times and her first impressions, weren't good ones. My mind drifted... a bit. Who has the patience or the time for anything other than first impressions, these days, right? You only get 142 characters on twitter. Your hi-speed internet, better stream that video, without a hitch, or you're picking up the phone. That express checkout lane, is just never, fast enough.

I quickly, came back into the conversation and listened to her, talk about the boy. I tried to reassure her, that all she needed, was time, to get to know him better. Time... to see the same things, her sees. I'm not sure she agreed with me. But the way I looked at it - she didn't have a choice. Not if she was going to have a good relationship, with her . Or was I wrong?

Snow had started to fall. The weather here, changes faster, than those lights, on that least favorite, intersection, we all know. Altered plans: the picnic would be at my place. I made a right, at the next street. I knew of a cute, little Italian deli, that sold great cheeses.

..........................................................
So...
Do first impressions hold true for you or do you ever change your mind about someone?
What first impressions do think you give off?

Bonus Question : Are you a cheese person or would you pass on the smelly ones?

Analogies & metaphors, are so much fun. Yes... perhaps, I got carried away... lol ๐Ÿ˜. .

First impressions don't always hold true for me. Many times, after I get to know someone, I end up changing my opinion about them, completely.๐Ÿ˜Š Afterwards, I find it hard to believe that I ever thought of them in that other way.๐Ÿ˜ฑ But you know.. that was a vibe I got from them...๐Ÿค”I

First impressions that I give off? Eeee.. I sometimes wonder, what type of first impressions I give off? ๐Ÿ˜ถ I'm almost afraid to say... 'Smarmy', one person called me once. Then again, she doesn't know me at all. I'd say I probably come across, sometimes, like a 'smart ass' . ๐Ÿ˜ฑ But a really, really nice 'smart ass'... ๐Ÿ˜Š

I'm a huge cheese guy. I don't think there is a cheese that I don't like.
I don't mind the smelly ones either... Blue cheese.. bring it on. With some wine and bread... fantastic!๐Ÿง€ ๐Ÿž๐Ÿท๐Ÿ˜Š

first impressions are important ....and lasting. I try an make good ones...i also try and gauge the others personna before delving into the dark sides...lol. I always give a second shot at it though, i think its like a restaurant....i mean maybe the chef was having a bad day the first visit. We all are entitled to and allowed a bad day....in my book.

Cute story....

i love cheeses too....wonderful on the palate....not so much on the waistline. Ahhh but oh well ~~

I want to apologize for my comment about your profile pic. I don't recall who is having A F F issues and who isn't. It wasn't my intention to be a smart ass. I know, I've had profile pic issues in the past. No offense intended and I hope, no offense taken. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Mmmmm stinky cheese!!!! Love it!

First impressions usually hold true for me... tho I think the first impression I give is dependent on circumstance lol! I don't tolerate stupidity very well and sometimes people are stupid right out of the gate so I'm sure their impression of me is I'm a right cunty bitch!

I'm a pretty poor judge of character. My 1st opinions are almost always way off. I feel like people need to know me to like me, but "see previous statement", so what do I know. When it comes to cheeses I'm pretty mainstream. Not a big fan of Velveeta and loathe American cheese.

Oh, dear. That cheese shop one liner has tickled my funny bone more than it's been tickled in a long time. I've gone back to read it at least 4 times while trying to write this comment!

What was the question? Oh! Yeah! First impressions ..... it's very difficult to overcome a bad first impression and sometimes I can't. I usually give people a second chance; places and things rarely. A first impression of me would probably contain words like friendly, cheerful or funny.

I like mild cheeses and at the risk of being reviled by cheese snobs everywhere .... I think I single handedly support the Velveeta industry! (though not for picnics. Picnics require cheddar or Colby or Gouda)

Opportunity may knock only once, but temptation bangs on the door forever!

I'll usually give people more than one chance. Hopefully... they give me, more than one chance as well. I have a tendancy to give people more chances than they give me.... ๐Ÿค”
Maybe I'm too soft.. ? ๐Ÿ˜‰It's what it is.. I don't mind being the one who extends an open hand....

Yep... I hear you on that point. I've been wrong - big time, on some occasions... ๐Ÿค”
Well.. cheese is an acquired taste.. right? Sort of like people. That's the analogy I was sort of making... ๐Ÿ˜Š

I was wondering if anyone would get 'that one'. Happy to oblige. There are other places, worth tickling.. but that's a start. ๐Ÿ˜Š
Oooo.. Good cheese choices...! Yes! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿง€๐Ÿ˜˜

Give me Brie or Smoked Gouda or Meunster of Monterrey Jack any day I love cheese with the exception of Gorgonzola ( I cant say why here- would spoil your lunch )
I try to give folks a second chance but mostly unless they are really shy, the first one is spot on. Like my new neighbors- the first encounter was after my first surgery and shews in my face about where to go for something she brought that she felt I needed ( I do not). Impossible to talk her down. I gave it two more tries- it's going to be a No Go.

Yep.. I get the 'gorgonzola' reference.. ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ˜€ LOL.. It's all good.... Like I say...An acquired taste... ๐Ÿ˜‰
Hmmm... Yes. Sometimes it just works out that way with people... You can give them multiple chances, and it just doesn't work. Oh well... I guess you won't be bringing them any of your baked treasures either... ๐Ÿ˜•
I wonder if they know, what they are missing.... ๐Ÿ˜”๐Ÿ˜˜

Interesting story talking like a baby carrot huh, I have to say first impressions to me are everything. As I have always had this knack about first impressions of people and I am hardly ever wrong. If she was so close to her daughter then she would of known more about the young man her daughter was dating. As when your close to your daughters they tell you everything well at least in my family.

Thanks for the interesting read, and I hope you got those cheese's you wanted and the picnic turned out to be everything you wanted. I hope you have a great day..

Seduce the mind and see what a wonderful adventure the body will take you on..

Yes .... big points for the metaphors. BIG. They were blended into your story so well, adding a subtle flavor that is only recognized when it's missing. Your writing contained them long before I came along. It's what drew me in .... the flavor of your writing.

I probably should have used another vegetable analogy... right? Which vegetable would you have used to describe a higher pitched voice...lol... ๐Ÿ˜
About the daughter.. You'd think she would know more, but her daughter is in her 20's and pretends to be pretty independant. I have 2 daughters and they've surprised me, on a few occasions... ๐Ÿ˜•๐Ÿ˜— You're lucky, to have had such an open relationships in your family.
The picnic was not the outdoor's feast I had in mind, but we salvaged the day.. ๐Ÿ˜Š
So no second chances if someone messes up on that first meet ? ๐Ÿค”

Oh my.... You are too kind... ๐Ÿ˜Š And coming from your critical eyes.. Well... thank you for those flattering words...
Although.. can someone really talk like a baby carrot? I might have used another vegetable, but I left that one in there.. out of sheer fatigue, in trying to find one more suitable.. Lol... ๐Ÿ˜ I'm sure you would have found another more apt fit? Brussels sprout.. perhaps? Lol ๐Ÿ‘

Well cheeses ("some of them), are an acquired taste... Your own cheese from your own cows? Wow... That must be an especially fresh and great cheese? I would love to try that! ๐Ÿ˜˜
You're right about wishing you were wrong about a first impression. Especially when it has anything to do with your family and kids, right? Hmmm.. ๐Ÿ˜•
Green bean hmmm. Sure... Lol Why not? Can't be worse than a carrot. Lol ๐Ÿ˜ Thanks for sharing your pov....
Do you still have the cows and make your own cheese? ๐Ÿง€

" I'm sure you would have found another more apt fit? Brussels sprout.. perhaps? "

No, not Brussels sprouts...they are round and round things tend to have a deeper voice. I thought baby carrot was good .... I could easily picture a sound similar to hungry baby birds cheeping for their next worm. I actually knew someone with a voice like that.

Really? Ok then.... I guess it's not as out there as I thought... And that's the thing.. right? We should trust our gut instincts and our first thoughts on most things. How many times have started with one idea or convulsion or anything... . then flipped around for a while - only to come back to my very, first thoughts on the matter... whatever it was...๐Ÿ˜Š
Interesting.... Baby bird.. ๐Ÿฆ๐Ÿค”Must have been fun if she started arguing with someone... ๐Ÿฅ๐Ÿฃ๐Ÿง๐Ÿ

Overall, I think I am pretty good at 'sizing' someone up based on a first impression.
Would I consider giving someone a second chance? Sure if I felt there was an underlying reason why things got off on the wrong foot.
I do enjoy a variety of cheeses and haven't tried one yet that I couldn't appreciate.
A winter picnic sounds like a lot of fun. I will bring the wine.
