What goes on in My Nova Scotia !
What goes on in My Nova Scotia ! Ok so in Nova Scotia these are the posts and programs which help reduce , reuse and recycle, what we do to help with the amount of trash which goes into land fills..this is not an in depth study but a surface structure just to let people know what we do and whats in place ... We have recycling posts set up in communities and towns receive electronics and things like empty paint cans or car and truck tires.. normally would be thrown in the garbage, these items are collected from the posts and recycled properly..Not put in land fills.. We have a large number of non profit organization drop off receptacles are specifically made for clothing , boots and shoes for clothing such as red cross which collects for the diabetes society or is dispersed and sent to countries which are in the throes of devastation or hardships. We have a number of animal rescues and shelters who place bins to collect recyclables such as pop bottles , pop cans , liquor bottles and beer cans , juice cartons which the recycling depots give deposits back on these products , which in turn helps raise money for the pets. Some of our major food chains ,such as Sobeys and superstores allow the rescues to take the pet food comes back off the floors outdated tore or cut items cat littler which was once dumped into the bins, now goes to the local shelters to feed the pets .. Our local fire departments have a bottle and can drive twice a year..they come to the homes and collect the items and turn them in for a profit on the deposit in order to raise money for the fire departments..I know how important it is because i lost my house by fire in 1978 ..i lost everything and the fire department did alot for me to get by till i was on my feet.. Right from the smallest thing to the biggest thing , the town has port a pottys set up on the walking trails and plastic bags set aside for people who are walking or walking with their pets for disposal. The towns also have recycling bins marked for waste , plastics or compostable products and the town pays people to empty them.. We even have a program called " adopt a highway" , where people or groups take one specific day to clean up litter on their stretch of their community..family day is a sight to see and yes all family members contribute to the clean up..The bags of trash or recyclables are sit along side the road or highway and labelled so the garbage truck can pick them up So you see there is always a way to put a better swing on helping to protect your community your town or just your little corner of the world, all you have to have is a bit of incentive and some time and the will to want to change the way people look at the environment. |

It has also become a mindset. My Mom live in Halifax County. She sorts her garbage in about 5 seperate catagories. Drives me crazy when I visit needing to ask which bag do I put this in. She will not throw spent batteries in trash and hoards them until there are enough to go to recycle depot. She would not even throw an old coffee maker in trash. Had to go to recycle depot.

I put up a blog this morning to support your original one on the Plastic issue. I recycle everything I can. The transfer stations all have bins you can put things in and they get re-cycled when full- not buried in a landfill. I compost food scraps that dont make it into a stew or soup pot. Many of our towns finally banned plastic bags. I hope styrofoam is immediately next (Virtual Symposium Group) use Virtual Symposium Group

I think all we need to do is make a conscious effort to separate the things that need to be recycled and the rest will follow,,,thanks
