Dating is a tricky business. It's not just the conscious you having that date; your unconscious and subconscious selves are also along for the ride. The realm of the mind is a complex business. We easily know what is in our conscious mind - that's the area of our conscious, waking functioning. The unconscious and subconscious are a whole new terrain, where the familiar things of our daily life may look quite different. The unconscious and subconscious are not the same. In fact, these terms were coined originally by Sigmund Freud, who is alternately viewed as a genius and a flake. However, his understanding of the mind still remains with us, 80 years after his death. In Freud's view, the unconscious was the repository of all the things that are not easily available to awareness, including our drives or instincts, and things that are put there because we can't bear to look at them, such as the memories and emotions associated with trauma.
