Sometimes, but lately it has been finding something common, or something to talk about, with the other person that seems to be more of a sticking point. I think this just comes down to social interaction experience and analyzing what is the social norm. A lot of times I try and talk about a topic I might know a lot about, such as sports, and I find it that I often kill the conversation because it turns out I know a whole lot more about it than the other person. For the most part, I find it better to remain humble about my knowledge and just follow along in a conversation with the other person's knowledge in mind.
