NPR's take on the hookup

A few days ago, while driving to work, NPR aired a segment on the changes in the cultures of relationships. The main point was made that western society has went from developing relationships that may become sexual to sexual encounters (the hookup; anything from making out to full sexual intercourse) that may or may not lead to more. I've included the address of the whole segment.

I found this interesting because it makes me think of one thing that has not changed in our society. When a woman gets pregnant, she is still looked down upon if she chooses not to marry the man whom she had the baby with. Now this might not be true in other areas, but it certainly is here in western Wisconsin. I think to myself, "Is this not a double standard?" We say, advertise and solicit hookups and random encounters at every turn, full well knowing what may or may not happen, yet when an undesired result occurs we fall back on one of our most conservative ideals. Do we not live in a society that prides itself in being forward thinking and equal opportunistic? Yet we still view a single mother, or an unmarried couple with a and inferior.

Now I realize this is a much larger issue and conversation then I can possibly hope to have here, but that is my two cents.

Long days and pleasant nights,

James

the power of good music

This is why I love summer. Every time I get in downer kind of mood, I always get the chance, on Monday and Tuesday night to play in community bad (for those of you in the chippewa valley, Wilson park Tuesday night at eight). And at community band, we always play happy music. This week we are playing some Leroy Anderson music (Many of you would recognize "Sleigh Ride") which is always happy and makes me feel better. Even if it is stuck in my head for three days.

Long Days and Pleasant nights,

James

why does crappiness come in streaks?

I'm not one to complain much, so I won't run down the list; but why does it always seem that good things and crappy things always run in streaks. I don't like it. I want it all to be dispersed in intervals so that the good and the bad happen at the same time. I know some people might then think that bad stuff is always happening; but, I tend to have a better outlook on life and would see it as good things are always happening. With this whole lump sum of crap, however, it can really get a guy down.
