Playlist 5.07.13

Before I get to my playlist I have a question to ask.

This past Saturday night I was out on my own enjoying the really nice weather by going out for a roll. Afterwards I thought I would stop by my favourite sports bar/restaurant and take in the Leafs and Bruins playoffs game ( I should say I am NOT a Maple Leafs or Bruins fan but I do have a keen interest in this series however) and the live music that was being offered.

Anyways - I was sitting at the bar enjoying a Diet Pepsi when this attractive medium brown long haired and glass wearing young lady comes up next to me and asks if I was keeping her seat warm. I politely said "pardon?" and smiled and she indicated that the seat I had my leg rested on was her seat next to me (I can't bend my left leg - it's fused so I needed a stool to rest my leg on while I sat). I apologized quite profusely not knowing she had vacated her seat. So I found another seat and swung my hips to my right and allowed her to use her seat.

For the next hour or so she and I talked (very randomly) about things and found we had things in common and musical tastes seemed to fall in line as well (plus her openly admitting to being a little kinky was kind of surprising/odd - can't recall where that came from however). The conversation flowed well and seemed like time flew by (had no idea we talked for 90mins straight). She was a wonderfully funny and quirky and nice lady. Pretty awesome actually. I liked her.

But here's where the problems are. She admitted to having had 3 or 4 beers by this point and felt tipsy. But when it came time to excuse herself to go home, I asked her to hold on a second so I may go use the bathroom. When I returned she had her coat on and had written her number down on a piece of paper (my bill actually) and gave it to me and asked me to call her.

HOWEVER though as she was going out the door she went into her coat pocket and ... TOOK OUT A CIGARETTE.

Of all the biggest turn offs I have it is that. I don't date smokers as a rule. But I was more concerned about how tipsy she was though and don't think she'd remember who I was given her state at the time (and for the record I would have waited with her until her taxi came to make sure she got in safely but by the time I got outside she was gone).

So my question to you all is:

1. What should I do?

2. Have you ever been attracted to someone only to find out that they had a habit you didn't like/turn off?

3. How did you approach it/what came of it?

Playlist.

1. "Love Like Blood" - Killing Joke
2. "Stop" - Jane's Addiction
3. "Teenage Lobotomy" - Ramones
4. "1969" - The Stooges
5. "Brown Sugar" - ZZ Top
6. "Teenage Rampage" - Sweet
7. "Izabella" - Jimi Hendrix Experience
8. "All The Way From Memphis" - Mott The Hoople
9. "Spellbound" - AC/DC
10. "Lumberjack Song" - Jackyl

Enjoy!

Until next time.

................ worry. I am sorta around. Still.

I just haven't updated in a long while. Not much is happening these days besides my sledge hockey season. Feels great to be back on the ice since my season ended this past January. It's hard to believe it took 6mths to heal plus the precautionary steps taken by my Dr for me to wait until October when I had my follow up to really make sure the coast was clear.

I spent most of my summer rolling my wheelchair through the park working on my cardio. The heart feels great. I can roll far but when you apply that to hockey it feels a little different. I feel good though and that's what matters. But when I got back on the ice though for the first time last month though I felt out of sorts with my sledge. I felt in shape but not in shape (does that make any sense?).My skating was badly off .... actually everything was off. Everything seems o be returning in time but not to where I want to be.

Patience is what I have been told. Patience.

That's more or less what's new. Plus, I just haven't updated because I can't think of ways to be entertaining. And with the surplus of other popular blogs that folks subscribe to I just felt like why should I put in the effort if it's going to be for now? Plus it felt like mine (and I am sure there are others that think/feel the same way) would be getting lost in the blog shuffle.

So don't worry my followers - I am doing OK. That's just the main reason(s) why I haven't updated in a (long) while.

Hope all is well!

Be kind and be good to each other.

NJS.

PS: This NHL lockout stinks!

............ still kicking around.

Not too much to report that's interesting other than my leg is STILL healing and in a cast. From when I was in at the clinic 3wks ago I was told it's about 2wks past that expected time frame for being healed. Supposedly it takes about 6-8wks to heal but I'm at 10 (well now 10+ at the writting of this entry).

I guess I must be a super slow healer. Uhg.

My Dr however though of trying something to see if it'd speed up the process. He asked if I had ever heard of a bone stimulation (yar har har! write your own jokes for that!) using ultrasound. I had said that I hadn't heard of such a thing. It ws explained that it speeds up the healing process of fresh fractures between 38-40% w/a 85% success rate, A lot of professional athletes/teams use these things. A interesting concept I supposed. Almost immediately he went out and got in touch w/his assistant to set in motion me getting a ultrasound Exogen bone stimulation machine.

I must admit I was a tad skeptical but at this stage I didn't care because I wanted to do everything that I can or could be done to not only get me walking again but more importantly getting me ready for hockey season in October!

So after sitting about for two weeks (after my apointment!),waiting to hear back from the company who makes this thing I recieved a call from them double checking my mailing info and asking when the local company rep could come by to show me how to use it. Thankfully the unit arrived last Thursday and I've been using it since Saturday (when the rep came by - was away on business).

I must say it's a neat little unit!

I will just say first that this is (and obviously!) not me in the picture. I just wanted to show you what the unit looks like first of all.

Anyways - for 20 minutes a day I apply a conductor to where the break is on my leg (via a window in my cast) which is held in place by a band (which has a hole in it where I put the conductor through and is held in place by the cap on it) that I place around my leg. It's crazy to feel the pulsing of the ultrasound on the affected area. It's not a very heavy pulse but it's faint enough you know something's happening.

Crazy but sci fi stuff!

Hopefully by my next appointment on May 3rd the Exogen unit will have done it's trick. I'm banking on it to be entirely honest w/you all. But if it's made significant progress and my Dr believes in it whole heartedly then it should be where it needs to be.

Keeping my fingers crossed!

Just a quick update before I go to bed.

I don't really have that much to really write about to be honest. Nothing too exciting is happening of late since I broke my leg. HOWEVER though I have had the chance to do a lot of thinking.

Over the last two weeks since everything went down the messages I have received from team management and friends asking how I am doing and what the status of things are has been overwhelming and very heart warming.

To know that I have so many people who care enough to take time out to send messages or just to ask how I am has left me stunned. Yes I know it's just a leg, this happens all the time, people break them but given my medical condition (don't worry, I won't be kicking off any time soon!) w/my legs it's just been, again, heart warming. I don't know if I can accurately describe how I feel in words because it feels indescribable. I don't know if I can describe "gratitude".

If I could describe how I do feel it is: Grateful

I also don't think the words "thank you" will ever be enough.

It's been a great life lesson.

I guess if I can say anything to try and bring and give this entry some kind of cohesion and clarity it's this:

Be grateful for those who love and care for you. Say thank you whenever or wherever you can when people ask how you are.

Be appreciative - always.

Be kind. Be good to each other.

I finally gave in. I'm doing HNW! (not quite what you were hoping was it? Sorry to disappoint! LOL!)

Yep, I'm showing my casted leg (ooh la la! and thanks iPhone!). So you're asking "so, like, what's the deal with the cast dude?"

Let me tell ya - not a clue how it happened. Actually, that's not entirely true. I had a sledge hockey game eleven days ago in Kitchener and when I got off the ice to transfer from my sledge to my wheelchair I noticed something wasn't right when I put weight on it. I should say that morning I went about my business as usual and was able to walk about the house, the change room, sat in my sledge the same way I had been sitting in it for six seasons. But somewhere along the line something happened.

Nothing out of the ordinary during the game happened. I didn't get hit very hard (or at all surprisingly) at all nor did I land awkwardly at any point either getting on or off the ice. Nothing felt odd either to me.

I very quickly left Kitchener to come back here to go to the ER (all in a splint consisting of my shin guard and hockey sticks made by our team trainer and my Chiropractor)and had X rays done. When I got my results back the ER doctor said "nothing is broken NewJack. Good news!".

Um - wait. How is it NOT broken when I can clearly move it awkwardly when I have a metal rod in it? (the metal rod for my leg fusion has been in there for 24yrs and thankfully wasn't disturbed - just the bone across my knee). Time to make an appointment to see my GP on Tuesday (at the time) methinks!

Thankfully my GP was able to get me into the Fracture Clinic pretty quickly. Must admit though NOT knowing (at the time) what is wrong is pretty nerving and also worrying that the smallest thing could make it worse (which thankfully nothing happened since I was super careful).

Fast forward to a week later and at the moment I can't play much less either practice. The part that hasn't been so fun was that our annual tournament was over the weekend and it was beyond EXCRUCIATING to watch your team play, see them lose and not be able to help try and right the ship. It was gut wrenching to say the least.

Anyhow I was at the Fracture Clinic here in London yesterday. It was confirmed by the head Orthopod of the clinic that my leg is indeed broken and my rod is still (thankfully) intact. I'll be going in for my follow up in about two weeks to see how my skin is holding up (you know, pressure sores, rubbing etc) and to see how the healing process is going.

If it isn't healing as it should be we'll explore possible surgical options to speed the process up so I can try and be ready for next season.

And to think - I was having a pretty decent season too! Scored my first of the season three weeks ago.

Bummer.

So that's been my life over the last 10 days.

Enjoy my sexy cast and participation in HNW! (yea - I'm a warrior - I'm tough!)

Hey Gang!

Just a little list of music (and the last for 2011) to help you all "get down" tonight for New Years Eve!

Have a safe and wonderful evening tonight my friends. Enjoy the evening and if you "enjoy" it way too much, call a cab and be sure not to drink and drive.

As for myself, before I do anything else I'll be watching our Junior Canadian men's hockey team take on the USA in the World Junior Championships. Should be a excellent game given the rivarly between our two countries over the years at this tournament (and the Olympics also).

There's not much on the line for the US considering that they are out of medal contention now. For Canada, they are on their way to the play downs.

For either team, one wants to win every game and one wants to beat the other on it's home ice/soil. A win is on the line and so is pride too.

May the best team win! (Canada of course!)

After the game ... I have no idea! Make it up as I go I guess. I'll figure something out!

Anyways - time to get moving along.

Have a FANTASTIC evening everyone!

Until next time.

NJS.

After reading the blog entry [post sonic_n_sideshow]

I just thought I would add one more to the list. The one I chose is: Ivana Santilli.

Some may have heard of the band Bass Is Base. If you haven't they were a Toronto based soul/funk band and had a couple of hits here in Canada during the mid 90's. The one that they are most known for is a track called "Funkmobile".

After the band broke up in the later 90's lead singer Chin Injeti moved to Vancouver and became a producer. Meanwhile rapper/percussionist Roger Mooking went on to become a restauranteur and now appears on the Food Network in "Heat Seekers". The one artist however that stayed busy post Base Is Base is singer/trumpet/keyboard player Ivana Santilli.

Not only is she a gorgeous but she's a very talented musician and singer.

She's released a few solo discs through the years but the one album that stands out is the album "Brown", released in 1999. It's a wide and very diverse album showcasing many styles and her influences. The one track that stands out is one called "Sun + Moon = Tomorrow" (a live/organic drum 'n bass track using instruments as opposed to the usual electronic vibe of the style). It's absolutely gorgeous.

Hunt it down on U Toobe but look more particularily for the performance from the Montreal Jazz Festival.

OK - Here we go.

I must admit that putting together this playlist has been quite a challenge to be honest. You see, my soundcard on my computer has gone on the fritz just recently so I have been relying on my iPod for my musical entertainment while I have been online (and killing my iPod battery a couple times already in the process)so my music selection is sort of limited (all 80GB worth on the 'pod) when it comes to piecing together my playlists.

Anyways - what I have assembled is something a little off the beaten path. A little old school electronic/ambient/*new old school retro sounding/old school hip hop w/a nod to new wave and a couple new(ish) bands.

As always, if you've never heard any of these songs or artists before .. search them out! You may have a new band or favorite artist(s)

Enjoy!

NJS.

Playlist: 12/04/2011 - "Soundcard is on the fritz so all I have is my iPod"

1. "Everything In It's Right Place" - Radiohead
2. "Autobahn" - ** Kraftwerk
3. *"A Real Hero" - * College feat. Electric Youth
4. "Helena Beat" - Foster The People
5. "Beat The Clock" - Sparks
6. "Car Thief" - Beastie Boys
7. "Buddy" - DeLa Soul feat. The Jungle Brothers & Q Tip
8. "True Faith" - New Order
9. "City Song" - Luscious Jackson
10. "I Will Possess Your Heart" - Death Cab For Cutie

** If you have 21 minutes to dedicate towards listening to this magnificent soundscape piece by one of the all time greatest (and pioneers of electronic music) all means do. Close your eyes and listen.

* From the "Drive" soundtrack. If you enjoy 80's new wave synth music w/a later 2000's update it's worth listening to the entire soundtrack.

............. thought I would quickly update the ol' blog here.

Also I thought I would let you all know I am still kicking around here. Just been really busy over the past week as the sledge team prepped for the big tourney we played in this past weekend out in Brampton.

I am proud to report that we placed 3rd in the "B" division. Not quite what we were aiming for but to come away with bronze instead of nothing would have been a absolute shame (or anything else short of criminal since we played and practiced so well leading into this tournament).

I couldn't be any more proud of the team.

Also - I'm still somewhat sore from over the weekend. It's amazing what playing 5 games in three days will do to your body. I like the physical part of the game but it's always that after it's all said and done phase I don't like. To think, I have two more tournaments after this one but thankfully they are all spread out within two months of each other! (phew.)

Next - practice tomorrow (err .. tonight) as we gear up for our next two league games in December.

NewJack needs a massage! Any lovely ladies willing to volunteer?

Hope all is well!

Until next time.

Just to continue what I had from last week's entry about hair. I thought that I would post up what I call my greatest hair mistake EVER.

I must admit that I really do like my hair long. There's just something about it I like. At this time about 5yrs ago I thought I needed a change. I wanted to keep it long but at the same time do something different. Somehow or another I got something into my head that BLONDE hair over my normal brown would be awesome. The thing I remember most about that fateful day was the mixed reaction it got from my family and friends when I showed it off. Some were quite reserved about their opinions on it while some were (I think) were being ..... polite? (how my stylist ever signed off on it I don't know even to this day!) Even one female friend who I made through a normal "Fishy" dating service evn thought I was a girl!

Owch.

Here's a picture of the mistake from when I went and saw Steely Dan that summer.

Again - Have there been any hair decisions you cringe about still when you think of them?

THE WAY that we all dress is a way to stand out in public. It says a lot about our personalities and what defines us as people. Of course as we all grow older our clothing styles change to reflect who we are at this point in time (but I would like to also think that small elements from when we were). younger transition with us too.

HOWEVER though the one thing that is constantly changing are hairstyles. Is short in? is long in? are bangs or teased hair from the 80's back in style? (some would hope not) We all have our preferences when it comes to that. We can stay with what we are comfortable with or step outside the box and try something new. I can safely say that through the years I have done short, super short to long to the mullet back to somewhat short, spikey back to average (gelled back of course!) then on to medium long, a bad colouring job which required going back to short (I'll post a picture of it in a future entry)then somewhat back to my current shoulder length long (yeah, my hair history is scattered!)

Here's a style that I had a few years ago. I thought it was a pretty neat style. It was fun, edgy and funky/sporty. The problem I had with it though was that the individual spikes took forever to twist. It was still neat though to have tried it.

So here's my question: Has there been a hairstyle you had which you liked? Or has there been a hairstyle you hated and couldn't wait until it grew out? Or what is your hair like now?

It must be the inner Star Wars geek/nerd in me that made me chuckle at this (while I ache all over from sledge hockey practice .... any lady volunteers to give me a complete rub down? )

I hope you find it as amusing as I did.

Off to bed to ache!
