Oh, for the love of god(s)!

I was at the gym this morning, watching CNN, doing the elliptical, and talking on the phone (yes, simultaneously. Shut up, I can multitask!), and there was a story about the SeaTac airport, and how they'd taken down the nine-foot tree that'd been there every year for the last twenty years or so. They took it down out of fear of litigation.

You might be thinking to yourself that this is yet another example of political correctness gone awry, another example of how "extreme" non-christian people are imposing their views on the rest of the public. You thinking that? Am I right? Because that's not what's going on here.

See, all the area rabbi wanted was a balance. He wanted a menorah display in same area-- not to supplant the existing display, but as an equal companion to it. I believe the exact word that the rabbi used to describe his reaction to SeaTac's decision to remove the tree was "appalled".

I think the whole thing's sad, really. It's gotten to the point where we've gotten so contentious about this issue of the holidays, so prepared for litigation over the question of what to celebrate, what to say to each other, whether to say Happy Holidays or Merry Christmas, that we're more willing to destroy our own traditions than to even consider including others in our time of celebration.

To me, the holidays are a time for family. For friends. For celebrating and feasting. We get so wrapped up in owning the trappings of our own cultural upbringing that we forget that it's a time for all people to come together and love each other, regardless of what they believe is the "reason for the season".

So, in keeping with that, my next comment will be comment number 100. Whoever makes it will get a special holiday gift from me. A gift that will be fun and beautiful and that I will probably forget to send you. Comment, people! Comment like the wind!

I think people are too commercial and not too family oriented like they should be....everyone needs to get back to the heart of Christmas and forget all that other crap!

Yeah... the holidays are the one time of year where we're supposed to open our hearts to people and celebrate our humanity, no matter what our personal faith. Yet we spend so much time in mall parking lots that that part of the season becomes really easy to forget. It's sad.
