If I Could Turn Back Time...

As Cher sings... what would you change? Something personal, something that effects a larger population maybe even world wide? Don't feel obligated to answer like you are in the miss universe competition. An answer that is totally selfish is very acceptable. After all you only live once and there is nothing wrong with taking care of yourself first. Especially for this question as we can't really turn back time can we...

Would it be a lost love?

A family member or friend that has passed?

A financial situation or disaster?

A friendship that has grown distant or ended?

Recaptured Youth?

Regain your health or that of someone close?

Technology... are you the Unabomber or just want to go back to a simpler time?

Maybe a career change?

A missed opportunity?

When I joined the Air Force back in 1981 I could have retired after twenty years. I signed up for six years initially. I decided it was time for me to leave around the 4-5th year after dealing with an unbelievable amount of incompetence from a cross trained higher ranking NCO. He had the mental capacity and maturity of an adolescent. Actually it was one incompetent one and a couple of ones that didn't have the balls to sort things out though I don't blame them for not doing so given the bonehead that was in charge. They were close to retirement and didn't need to be court-martialled for standing up to the idiot. I went around the idiot to his bosses and got things on a better keel. But by then I had decided that I didn't need to be in a profession where I couldn't speak my honest opinion with out risk or being jailed or court-martialled myself.

I did like the work I did and I was offered a very interesting job in a desert area that I would have loved to take but in the military there are no guarantees and I might have ended up at another location one day in a similar situation and not been able to bite my tongue enough to keep out of trouble.

I would consider changing several of those things. But . . . the things that have come out of the ones that didn't work as I wanted them to tend to work out pretty well. E.G. a lost love turns into another love.

When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

SO true... you never know what's down the road which is all the more reason to leave a situation that isn't good and get back on the road.

I've given this subject too much thought over the years.

I like to say that I wouldn't change a thing. .. What I've been through and my decisions led me to being the person I am. .. But there's always the "what if?".

I tend to pass up the earliest one, which would be to not start smoking. .. That would have altered my childhood, and I couldn't even think about how that would have changed my teenage years.

But I did make a decision as a teenager that I often wonder what would have happened if I had chosen the other option.

I remember it well. .. It was a split second decision. It was actually something that I wish I had put more thought into, but thinking isn't a teenagers strong suit.

I had an evening interview for a promotion at the telemarketing company I was working at. It went well and I was offered a major promotion. (I was only 17! This was a dream.) ... But downstairs, on the production floor, was a girl I had a crush on. .. She had wished me luck for my interview.

I passed up the promotion, because it would have meant working the graveyard shift. (A shift I had worked and been comfortable in already.) .. But I wouldn't be able to date that girl if I was working that shift. .. I now refer to that girl as my "high-school sweetheart" .. We had some good years, but a messy ending. .. Ah, puppy love. lol

I often wonder what would have happened if I had chosen my career. .. I'm not sure what would have happened. .. Even though I was a HS dropout, I was a rising star in my field. .. I knew computers intuitively. .. I might not have gone to college, but I would have followed a different career track for sure.

But I chose the girl.

Read my diary Journal of a Taxi Driver for taxi stories and pictures of flowers and trees.

Indeed the "What If's" so many choices through out a life that could have changed your life path and where you ended up or are now but then again it might have turned out worse. You might have met a different woman who was a murderer for insurance money... But it is nice sometimes to ponder what might have been but keep an eye on where you want to go as that's "more" in control... if there is such a thing.

I would have spent more time with my Grandma before she died. I still miss her so much.

If we knew when our loved ones were leaving we would probably find more time to spend with them but it doesn't usually work out that way.

There are things that I wish I had the power to change but some events are beyond human control. So, I would change my feelings about exercise ... and learn (hopefully) to like it!

Opportunity may knock only once, but temptation bangs on the door forever!

tickles4us replies on 10/22/2016 9:36 pm:
That is a difficult one. I know exercise has never been my thing but I have always been active in the work I do so weight has never been an issue for me. But you can still find a way to be active just don't think of it as exercise. Walking is good as long as you don't have impediments to that and have a safe place to do it. Exploring the neighborhood or the hiking trails is an interesting walk that is more interesting than exercise.

I've tried to get it through to my kids that they would be better off investing for their future in a retire fund of some sort then to be spending money on fancy cars and stuff. Go cheap and save the extra...

I can't imagine changing anything, even the shitty things (and trust me I've had some ultra shitty things happen to me in my life). I would be someone different and I wouldn't want to be someone else or have a different sensibility.

If I were going to change something on a world stage level, I'd see to it that the entire script to Macbeth, and all of the other missing Shakespeare plays, weren't lost.

tickles4us replies on 10/22/2016 9:23 pm:
I wouldn't mind undoing some physical injuries as I have found that you do pay for those the rest of your life and they tend to get worse with age but I agree I wouldn't want to change who I am and that would be easy to do if you change your experiences.

I have to admit I've never read any Shakespeare but I have enjoyed the movies, plays and such that I've seen.

Wouldn't we all love to be 20 again? I'd love my 20 year old body and my 52 year-old brain!!! That is as likely to happen as me winning the lottery. Nice to dream, though.

tickles4us replies on 10/22/2016 9:16 pm:
I could use a bit less wear and tear on my body... it would sure make some things more fun again. Hiking and exploring in the woods was something I always loved and still do but it comes with a price now, my knees often get quite painful. A little rejuvenation could go a long ways.

Being slightly flippant, I'd turn back time when Donald Trump's parents had sex and they decided with considerable foresight not to have had sex!
