I was union when I worked for the govt, and never again. The people that I worked with sealed the deal for me - I feel that unions simply protect the people who want to do SFA in their careers. I did their work while they did fuck all because they were permanent and couldn't be fired. Give me private sector and non-union all the fucking way from now on. Unions no longer do what they were meant to do.

I was alos union for a while... and only because I had to be to get the job. I hated it and agree with cnn's views that it mostly just protected the lazy senior people. And almost put us out on strike a couple of times. Unions are definitely no longer doing what they were originally formed to do.

Feel lucky all you got was cursed at. When it comes to unions it can take just a hair trigger split second before it erupts into violence. And of course it's never they're fault.

I also worked for the government that is not a typical union job. Why ? Because it is ran by the government and the governmet is out of touch with reality.
The government often ends up having to hire people to meet quotas.
Some times hiring people that are not the best qualified but to meet employment levels.
A short time ago a Caucasion lady in Ontario was denied access to apply for a job not because she was not qualified. But because she did not have the right ethnicity , they were trying to hiring.
someone from a certain target group.
This happens often with goverment or bureaucracies. i.e law enforcement, fire departments, etc having to hiring visible minorities,,etc.
Now I am all for making the work force more diverse, but sorry i am not for excluding people to meet targets. If it was wrong before to not hiring the Purple lady it is triple wrong to now in this day & age of enlightment to not hire the white guy.
Except in Governmet where logic should never be applied.
Sorry to hijack.
If any one thinks that without organized labour, that standards would be maintained or stay in place. Look at the housing industy till just few years ago. Safety was a word nothing else.
There are still many people working all alone, without any one checking on them. just a short time ago in that industry portapotties did not exist in huge tracks of subdivisions. No unions to insist that the people working should have a clean place to go.
With out Unions we would not have worker compensation, statuary holidays. Over time, maximum hours of work, the right to refuse unsafe work, on & on.
We have less unions today and we have a smaller middle class.
By the way I am a small business owner not a union worker.
Yes I to saw the people working for the government that felt they were untouchable, they probaly should not have been retained past their probation in the first place.
The work is going to get done either by a well paid employee or by a poorly paid employee. With a well paid employee the company might not have as BIG a profit.
The wing nut that got in your face is a poor example of a human let alone any particular group.

Man, don't even get me started... Oh wait too late

I work for Canada Post and I'm pretty sure we're all a little peeved at CUPW to say the least, but I get to see the psychotic insides to one of the highest paid unions in Canada. They wish that they could slap us on the wrist if we take a nap on the job and are caught...

Unions had a purpose for sure, and likely they still do, but they need to work like many other movements and disband when they are no longer needed. Once the revolutionary movement was over in the States it would be pretty damn silly to still have one kicking around. Not that I don't benefit from them, but they need to be taken out at the shins, hilariously enough though there is nothing set up for an employee to deal with another employee either so I can get away with trash talking them with impunity

Of course on the other hand, there'd be no desire to unionize if all employers were always reasonable. I don't know every workplaces methods or standards so will use the extreme of the industrial revolution or sweat shop labor and say that at the very least, we have to do something to prevent that from happening.

Then again I'm an anarcho-communist so my economic beliefs are a bit more extreme than the topic itself.

Love/Hate me for who I am, not who you think I am.

Unions .... promoting mediocrity wherever they go!!

My favorite quote "that's not my job" or how about this one "I don't have to do that"

Gompers, your place in time has come and gone.

The entire situation simply reiterated my deep dislike for unions. Yes, I am painting them all with one brush, but it seems as tho most people on here feel the same way.
