BEST ALBUM COVER?  A friend came to visit me this weekend just gone. We always do the same thing - drink a few beers, eat an Indian curry and talk shit (usually football, music and politics). As were walking to the pub, he remarked that “there’s a lot of totty in town”. There was, it turned out that there was a cheerleaders’ convention in town and the streets were teeming with young aspiring girls. Our increasingly drunken conversation turned to the best record album cover of all time after we realised that, in the age of downloads, our interest in album cover art will be eventually consigned to a minority pastime pursued by old people. The merits of the following album covers were discussed over a few beers: Roxy Music’s Country Life, Eagles’ Hotel California, New Order’s Power, Corruption & Lies, Patti Smith’s Easter, Blondie’s Parallel Lines, The Velvet Underground’s Andy Warhol, Carly Simon’s Playing Possum, The Clash’s London Calling, Bruce Springsteen’s Born in the USA, Led Zeppelin’s Physical Graffiti, Nirvana’s Nevermind, The Rolling Stones’ Sticky Fingers, The Beatles’ Abbey Road, Robert Palmer's Sneakin' Sally through the Alley, The Cars’ Candy-O, Sex Pistols’ Never Mind the Bollocks, Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon, David Bowie’s Aladdin Sane, Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures, Ry Cooder’s Into the Purple Valley, Steel Pulse’s Handsworth Revolution, and 10cc’s How Dare You! album covers. Just before our curry, we made our choices. My friend chose The Beatles’ Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album cover, which I thought was a very safe choice. I opted for Primal Scream’s Screamadelica album cover – see above image - while realising it’s difficult to separate the album cover from the album (and the memories!). What is your favourite album cover? What were you doing when the record with your favourite album cover was released? Do you have friends where you do the same thing every time you meet? |

I was going to say The Stone Roses, but then I remembered this...

For me it has to be Santana's "Abraxas" or Cream's "Disraeli Gears", me discovering them at a time when art was a favorite past-time. In fact, Abraxas got me interested in doing artwork that involved a lot of inter-twining figures and an abundance of colors I visit New York once per month to hang with the two guys who were in my wedding party. We play cards ( a game called Kalookie), drink beer, and talk crap; or they talk crap and I provide the laugh-track. Our taste in music differs: mine is a concentration of Rock and British Reggae, my best man is into hard-core Reggae, and the other guy is more into slow-jams and some !

I can't remember that far back! but I paid more attention to the music than the cover. As far as the friends go, yes, we comment on each others blog posts!

School's Out was my first album I bought. It wasn't mentioned in my conversation with my friend. It should have been!

I would contend that a number of the albums you list are famous in spite of dire covers! I can't post images here, for which, you may be grateful! Iron Maiden by Iron Maiden was highly striking and probably initially attracted me more than the music. PiL Metal box is worthy of a mention. Jethro Tull's Thick as a Brick, I chose from several other Tull albums just because I wanted to read the cover (and I believe it to be amongst the very best of albums from any genre at any time). My all time favourite though, is Frank Zappa's, Ship arriving too late to save a drowning witch.

I used to hang out with a friend who had very different music tastes - his was prog rock and mine was disco, It was fun - we agreed sometimes (on indie rock) and we disagreed sometimes (Stones versus Beatles especially), but in the end it didn't matter as the beers went down!

I've not seen that cover of Led Zeppelin's In Through The Outdoor album before your post. It's good. Thanks for posting it.

I posted my favourite album cover of all time (which, not surprisingly, is my favourite album of all time) a couple of posts ago... Iron Maiden, Live After Death. I also really like the cover for the Trivium album Ascendancy (pictured). I wish I could shrink these more easily. What was I doing when Live After Death was being released? Becoming increasingly aware of how small-minded potential employers were and realising that the workforce didn't want me in it. Anti-discrimination laws hadn't come into affect in Australia regarding my particular circumstances at the time and took so long to come into affect that now, with a very limited work history, my employment prospects are non-existent. I have/had a very good fwb who whenever we get/got together, the itinerary was eerily similar. I think that's why he and I don't see eachother often anymore. I'm so behind in my replies on blog comments, sorry!
